It's Friday!

Hello, learning friends!
We had a great morning in Math and we'd love to share a bit about it!

We started with Fraction Splats.
What are Fraction Splats, you may ask?
Here's an example:

The total value on the page is indicated in the upper righthand corner. (In this case, 8.)
The value is represented in the form of circles and fraction circles. Using what we know, our task is to determine what value is hidden behind the 'splat.'
The total value of what we see is 2 1/2 (1 whole plus 3 halves = 2 1/2)
Therefore, 5 1/2 must be hidden behind the splat.

After working through a few different 'splat' pages, we took our discussion one step further to include how we could determine the quantity of halves it would take to make up the total.
Ex. The value 2 1/2 could also be shown as 5/2. We know this because 2 halves make a whole (2/2) and there are three additional halves shown. 2/2 + 3/2 = 5/2.
That would mean 5 1/2 can be represented as 11/2, and in total, it takes 16 halves to make up 8.
16/2 = 8.
Cool, right?!

Here's another one for you to try!
What value is hidden by the splat?

Did you get 2 3/4? (11/4?)Way to go!
(And, did you know, by working through these slides, you've just introduced yourself to the concepts of improper fractions and mixed numbers? Really!)

After working through the Fraction Splats, we continued working with the idea of improper fractions and mixed numbers by breaking out the pattern blocs!
We got to work creating different images in order to determine the value of the each 'design.'

By collaborating with our table groups, we were all able to represent the designs both concretely (with the pattern blocks) and symbolically (by solving for the improper fractions and the mixed number).
How math-tastic is that?!
Great work today, everyone! :)
