Brrrrrrrrr-sday!

Happy Thursday!

These cold temperatures certainly aren't great for much, except if you happen to be talking about negative (and positive) integers in Math, which coincidentally, we are!

Today in Math, we began our mini-unit on integers and, as a class, came up with quite a long list of where we see positive and negative integers in our daily lives.

We will be working with integers over the next couple of weeks, so that we can successfully:
1. extend a number line to include numbers less than zero
2. order a set of integers and correctly place them on a number line
3. compare two integers using the appropriate symbols ( <, >, = )
4. describe contexts in which integers are used

Have a great weekend! Stay warm! :)

Brrrrrr! It's Wednesday!

Here's a question to get your brain warmed up...

How many times do we use the digit '7' when writing the numbers from 1 - 100? 1 - 1000?
How do you know? What is your strategy?

Brrrrrr!

It may be c-c-c-cold outside, but inside Room 208 it's nice and toasty!

In Math, after doing our calcul mental assessment, we put our addition skills to work as we faced off in an "Addition War" tournament.
Bravo to Ellie and Aidan who tied in the A-side final!

In Science, we continued our procedure-writing activity from yesterday and had a chance to put our procedures to the test! Each group, in turn, read out their step-by-step instructions and Mme Careen followed the steps to see if we were successful in explaining how to carry out the experiment. All groups did incredibly well, leaving only minor "nitpicky" corrections to be made. Bravo à tous!

Happy Monday!

Hello!
What a great morning we had together!

In Mathé, after correcting our Calcul Mental sheet, we had a work period to finish up our graphing booklet and our Transformations art piece. A few of us were also introduced to the Math game,
"Ninja Bed Bugs."

In Français, we took some time for daily reading and then had some class time to finish and review our Le Chandail de hockey resumés that we started on Friday. Most groups will be ready to share their resumés with each other during class tomorrow. Bravo!

Finally, in Science, we worked in our table teams to do a procedure (la méthode) writing activity for an experiment Mme Careen made up. Before starting, we discussed what a good procedure should include. Our list included: it should be in order, the steps should be numbered, the steps should be detailed and easy to understand/follow.

We will have 10 minutes in class tomorrow to finish our procedures before Mme Careen tests them out to see if we were successful in writing out our directions. Wish us luck! :)

Before wrapping up this post with Agenda Items, I wanted to take a quick second to celebrate our band students who did a surprise "flash mob" style performance in the hall today right before lunch!
What a FUN way to end the morning!
You can see the performance by clicking on the link below. (A BIG thanks to Mme Banks for catching this event on camera and sharing it with me so that I, in turn, could share it with you!)

It's Friday!

Happy (way. too. cold.) Friday! :)

Today in Français, we worked in groups to write a resumé for Le Chandail de Hockey, the book we are currently studying in class.

Collaborating with our peers, we wrote down the main events of the story, using a variety of transition words to connect our ideas together. We will share our resumés with the class next week, having one more opportunity to review our own group's work before Mme Careen assesses our writing.

Thursday!

Brrrr! It's a chilly Thursday out there!
To forget about the cold, we had a busy morning of learning here in Room 208!

In Math, we spent the period analyzing different types of tables and graphs, including: bar graphs, double bar graphs, broken-line graphs and circle graphs.

Next up, we got started on our next CFOO presentations and, using PicCollage, made
Oxytocin (Happy)/Cortisol (Stress)collages.
Please ask me what photos I chose to include for each section of my collage.

We ended the morning with Science, taking time to write our conclusions for Experience #1.
A reminder that completed lab reports are due in class tomorrow.

Have a great afternoon, everyone! Stay warm! :)

Le chandail de hockey

Today, in Francais, we read the book "Le chandail de hockey" together as a class.

Every few pages, we would stop and ask questions about the story and make additional predictions as to what might happen next. We learned, in the end, that wearing a blue and white Toronto Maple Leafs jersey in small town Quebec, circa 1948 does NOT get well received.
