Thursday

Happy Thursday, learning friends!

Today in Français we added one new rotation to our LaLaLa time: "Lecture Avec Enseignante" (reading with a teacher). We will work with Mme Careen either in small groups or one-on-one to accomplish different reading goals, whether it be word pronunciation, text comprehension, or much more! We will now rotate through the three different "La"s during our daily reading time, having the chance to read independently, with a partner and with Mme at least once each week.

Also in Français, we have started using a graphic organizer to plan our "la paix" poems. After listening to three mentor texts about peace, we have had a chance to reflect on what peace means to us.

We are connecting our five senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, sound) to different memories that bring us peace. Our first drafts will be due at the end of class tomorrow. Mme Careen will be reading over our texts and beginning to make our "la paix" anchor charts to support us through our writing and editing process. We'll keep updating you on our next writing task as we go. Stay tuned!

In Math, we learned a new mental math strategy today: "Divise et Double." When solving a multiplication equation, we can re-balance the equation to create an equation that is easier for our brains to solve!

Ex: 4 x 45
Divide the factor 4 by 2 to get 2. Balance the other factor (45) by multiplying it by 2 to get 90.
The new equation is now 2 x 90.
We can easily double 90 to get 180.
And voilà! 4 x 45 = 180!

Try this same strategy with the following equations:  25 x 6     8 x 35      4 x 65
Happy calculating!

First Day of Term 2!

Happy Monday, friends of learning!
We had a busy morning of learning together as we welcomed Term 2!

In Math, we learned how to break down numbers into a product of their prime factors using factor trees. You can do this with any non-prime number. 42? Sure! 100? You bet!
Please ask me to show you how it's done!

In Français, we worked in small groups to summarize the article, "Dia de los muertos," an article that we had originally read around Halloween. After reviewing some of the tougher vocabulary as a class, we reread the article before getting started with our writing. We used the "Je résume" graphic organizer to help us plan out our writing and choose appropriate transition words. All groups collaborated well together to accomplish the task. Bravo!

Finally, in Science, we learned the true identity of our Tomato groups! Dah dah-dah daahhhh....
Group J was the control group and Group K was the group of seeds that spent 6 weeks on the I.S.S. last summer! The majority of the class had identified the groups as such, proving that we have some super scientists amongst us!

Monday, Monday!

Happy Monday!
It's the last week of Term 1!
We're going to have a busy week finishing up 'this n' that' to ensure Mme has the best overall picture of our learning in time for report card writing this Friday! Wish us luck! :)

In Math this morning, working in randomized groups at the whiteboard, we tackled a question about hotdogs and hotdog buns. How silly is in that hotdogs come in packs of 12 and the buns come in packs of 8?! How many of each would we need to buy of we didn't want any waste and were hosting a party of around 100 people? Please ask we how my groups tackled this problem. What did we find?

Friday!

Hello, everyone!

With the end of Term 1 fast approaching, we are busy each morning trying to finish up a variety of tasks in Math, Science and Français.

In Math, we are continuing to work with factors and multiples and are getting ready for our first assessment next week. We will continue working to review a variety of questions and word problems so that we are confident in applying our skills.

Today in Science, we completed a dichotomous key assessment using dried beans!
After brainstorming with our groups yesterday in class to create a word bank on the whiteboard, we got to work today sorting beans by asking a set of specific questions. We look forward to sharing our "bean keys" with you Tuesday evening at our Celebration of Learning!

To finish off our morning in Français, we did a listening activity about eating insects (ewww!) and then had a chance to work with Mme Champagne to finish off the resume of our Suresh article. We will now complete a set of comprehension questions about the article to show what information we can pull from an article after reading and studying it as a class.

Bravo to everyone for a great morning of learning! :)

Wednesday

Hello, friends of learning!
We had a great morning of learning today!

In Math, we continue to practice our mental math strategies and have started solving one question using two different strategies. We've been practicing this approach by first solving a mental math question using a strategy with which we are familiar, and then conferring with a classmate to see what strategy they chose. After using both strategies, we decide which one we prefer and explain why. This will help us practice a variety of strategies and learn that a toolbox of many different mental math strategies will help become more efficient when calculating a variety of math equations.

In Français, we are practicing our listening skills by answering a set of questions when Mme reads a text aloud. Today our text was about a baking attempt that didn't turn out as planned. Also in Français, we are finishing up our work with our Suresh article and will soon be attempting our next article using "les 4 fantastiques" in a group without Mme's guidance.

Finally, in Science, we celebrated the remaining Science Design Process projects and also took some time to observe our tomatoes. Most of our seeds have germinated and many plants are starting to grow more leaves! VERY exciting! Our last official observation day for our Tomatosphere experiment will be Monday of next week, and then we will start analyzing all the data we collected to make one final prediction of which group is which before we send off our results!

Lest We Forget

Together as a school community we gathered to honour those who fought for our freedom.
After the ceremony, we took time to reflect independently about the assembly and about
what Remebrance Day means to us.

What really touched me was how many people died because of war and how many people have to leave their families to protect their home and all of their loved ones.

Something that touched me in the ceremony today was the video with all the soldiers that passed away in war. Their sacrifices gave us our freedom!

I really liked how they showed our 6 word memoirs because we worked very hard on them.

C'est triste que plus de 66 000 personnes sont mortes pendant la guerre.

Merci. Thank you. I thank you for sacrificing your lives for our community. You did a lot and we will remember forever because 1 day isn't enough to remember.

I really appreciated the hard work that went into the ceremony and the effort that the band did to do that amazing O Canada song. Thank you Ecole Ness. The ceremony was fantastic.

I didn't know that Indigenous Remembrance Day was a thing. Respect to all the soldiers.

I appreciate how they mentioned people who didn't get honoured by their hometown because they didn't know.

Today I learned about Indigenous Day.

Thank you for serving our country and fighting for our freedom.

Today made me think a lot more about all the people who served our country. I want to say thank you to all the people and families who fought for our country.

My great-Grandma survived World War II.

I learned that there was an Indigenous Remembrance Day on November 8th to remember all the Indigenous people that were in the war.

I am grateful for all of the people who fought for our country and our freedom and risked their lives just for us.

I really appreciated the music and I really liked that they mentioned it was Indigenous Remembrance Day because it's nice to be celebrating not just 'ours' but both.

I am very grateful for all the people who saved Canada. Also the people who fought for our freedom.

I learned that one great or small act can change the world. It takes brave men and women to say I love my country, I will fight for it.

I am thankful for those who served for our country and fought side by side for our freedom.

I would like to thank all the soldiers that risked their lives for our country and for us. Merci.

A handy mental strategy to try!

Hi everyone!

Take a look at our new Mental Math multiplication strategy, "Noticing Nines."
Ex: 7 x 99
Yikes! That sounds hard! 😟
Don't worry! It's actually easier than you might think!
We can round up 99 to 100, making the question 7 x 100.
7 x 100 = 700.
In rounding, we included 1 too many groups of 7 in our answer, so we have to balance
our answer by subtracting 7. 700 - 7 = 693.
So, 7 x 99 = 693. Ta da!

This strategy is extremely helpful when dealing with money, too!
Four loaves of bread at $1.99? No problem!
1. 4 x $1.99 = $?.??
2. 4 x $2.00 =  $8.00
3. $8.00 - $0.04 = $7.96
4. 4 x $1.99 = $7.96

Please, try this one at home! :)

Wednesday

Happy Wednesday!
We had a great morning of learning in Room 208.

In Math we started by working in our table groups to solve a word problem involving factors.
Please ask me how my group came up with seating plan options for Mme Chalifour and what the ideal seating arrangements would be!
Also in Math, we filled out a 100 chart using different symbols to indicate multiples of 2,3,5 and 7. Any numbers with a symbol were identified as Composite Numbers (les nombres composes) - numbers having 3 or more factors. All "left over" numbers (numbers without symbols) were identified as Prime Numbers (les nombres premiers) - numbers having only 2 factors: 1 and itself.
And then there is Number 1. Prime? Composite? Please ask me to find out! :)

In Français, we started with Mme Careen reading us the story, "Qu'est-ce que la paix?" The pictures in this book are absolutely beautiful and we noticed that there is a dove on every page.

We will be reading different peace-themed picture books over the next couple of days in honour of Remembrance Day, but also in preparation for our next writing task in Français.
After reading together, we continued our work on our "Suresh" article and listened to the remaining CFOO presentations before calling it a morning. Phew!

We are busy every day, getting ready to finish Term 1 with our very best work!
Bravo à tous!

CFOO!

Félicitations!
We have just finished our first round CFOO presentations and we are already showing that we are a promising group of public speakers!

What is CFOO, you ask?
CFOO (Le Club Fabuleux des Orateurs et Oratrices) is a public speaking "club" (similar to its English friend, TUSC) that will help students improve their oral French skills through short presentations. There are fifteen different presentation options, separated into three categories: Research, Opinion and Creativity.
Our CFOO preparation and presentation periods alternate on Day 2, period 3.

For the first presentation, we chose one of the five Opinion options. We prepared a short oral presentation, fulfilling all of the criteria (listed on the page we have in our binder). Our presentations this time were mostly in the form of speeches, but they can also take on various other forms: a poster, a puppet play, a song, a poem, a painting, a PowerPoint, a movie, etc. - the possibilities are endless!

We discussed what we should keep in mind while making an oral presentation to the class and Mme Careen has the criteria written on a chart paper so we can review them before each CFOO session. Our list includes: keeping eye contact with the audience, speaking clearly and enunciating all of our words, projecting our voice and speaking at a good pace with expression.

Now that we have our first presentations under our belts, we will review as a class what went well and what we should work on for our next set of presentations. Our next CFOO work period will be next week - Tuesday, November 13, with the next set of presentations following on Wednesday, November 21.

Bravo à tous! :)

Thursday!

Happy November, everyone!
We had a great morning of learning today!

In Math, we worked at the white boards in our randomized groupings to solve two different Math problems: "la croix des cartes" et "le cercle magique."
We all had different strategies of how to approach solving these tasks, and many of us were successful in finding multiple solutions for each task.
Please ask us about the questions from class today! We challenge you to solve them, too! :)

In Français we continued working on our drafts for our second writing piece "Les buts." Many of us have now reviewed and edited our drafts and are ready to start our good copies. Once we have handed in our good copies to Mme, we will be able to start designing our inspiration board on the iPad using the PicCollage app! Fun!

In Science, we are continuing with our daily observations of our tomato seeds. Many have now germinated and the tiny plants are growing taller every day!
We also had time in Science this morning to work on our Design Process project. We will have one more work period in class on Monday and then the remainder of the project will need to be completed on our own time, with projects being due at school on Monday, November 12.
