We made it!
The last day before spring break!
This morning, after starting our day off in the library, we tried something new in Math.
Working in randomized groups at the white boards, we tried our hand at solving "Math mobiles."
What are Math Mobiles?
Math Mobiles are mobile pictures made up of a variety of shapes. Using the total value given at the top of the mobile, we must work through each mobile branch to determine the value of each shape.
Our goal today was to talk through our steps and reasoning with our partners.
Our next step will be to write out our steps and equations in the order in which they were completed.
Our final step, will be including the proper Math notation with each step (aka : using algebra!) to fully explain our process from beginning to end.
There's a whole lot of Math learning in store once we get back from break. It's going to be great! :)
*****
Wishing you all a safe and restful spring break!
Have a great week! :)

WISE Presentation!
Happy Thursday!
We were SO happy to welcome Mme Emily to our classroom today!
After a quick 'crash course' in electrical circuits, we were on our way designing and building different different circuits to make fans spin, light bulbs light up and small speakers play "Happy Birthday!"
We had fun experimenting and exploring all different sorts of inventions.
Bravo à tous for such a great morning! :)

Happy Vernal Equinox!
Welcome, spring!
We had a great spring-themed morning, including a video about Seasons from the very wonderful
Bill Nye and a chance to start writing our very own "PRINTEMPS" acrostic poems.
If all goes well, our poems will be published here on the blog on Friday. Wish us luck! :)
*****
Agenda:
1. Pizza lunch tomorrow (Thursday)
A reminder that the Casse-croûte will be closed.
2. WISE - Electricity interactive presentation tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
**Be sure to check back tomorrow for pictures! It's going to be SO great!**

Tuesday, Tuesday
Hi, team!
Popping in with a quick look at what we were up to in Math this morning.
After Mme handed back our last 2 problem-solving questions we worked on in Term 2, we took time to celebrate what we are doing well and what are some things we can work on to further improve on the "communication and reasoning" portion of our problems.
We then got to work on a new problem. After reading the question together as a full class, we were divided into randomized groups of 2 or 3 for about 10 minutes of discussion time as to how we might approach solving this problem. During this time we discussed different strategies and perhaps even arrived at a solution. Some of us chose to work standing at the white boards while other groups chose to work on a small white board to collaborate.
After our talk-time was over, we headed back to our spots and got to work on writing out our work independently, being sure to keep all of the next-steps we discussed earlier in mind.
Great work this morning, everyone! :)

Happy Term 3!
Happy Monday! Happy Term 3!
Our week is already off to a great start!
In Français, after our daily reading time, we continued with our Zamboni study. In today's chapter, we learned more about le conducteur de Zamboni and we get a glimpse into how the narrator is feeling after all of his 'dream' sessions in the Zamboni.

Then, in Math, even though we missed it by a day, we took a bit of time to celebrate
St. Patrick's Day!
After doing some coordinate and PEDMAS questions, and eating some Lucky Charms (yum!), we played a special "CHANCE" game to round out the rest of the period. Fun!

Second-last day of Term 2!
Happy Wednesday!
After writing our PEDMAS assessment this morning, we switched gears and started getting ready for Science! After Mme Careen shared the assessment outline, we worked in randomized groups of three to sort, group and review a series of cards with the names, characteristics and examples of the five Kingdoms of Living Things. We worked well together in our groups and are now feeling more confident for our assessment in class tomorrow!

Colouring a "secret" PEDMAS picture to help us master the order of operations. It's also great practice for our basic Math facts, too! |
More PEDMAS practice! We're getting ready to challenge our families on Thursday! Who will complete the PEDMAS-popsicle-stick puzzles first? |

Have a great weekend!
It's Friday! Hooray!
We made it through a busy week and next week promises to be even busier as we finish up Term 2.
Some of the things on our list for next week:
Math: a few more PEDMAS activities and a final review before we complete a short assessment. We will also be keeping up with our mental math AND completing a problem-solving question or two!
Science: we will continue learning about the five kingdoms of living things. We should already be doing a short, daily review of what we have learned so far so that we become more and more familiar with the new vocabulary we are learning daily in class. We will be completing a short assessment about the characteristics of living things AND the 5 Kingdoms (les 5 règnes) near the end of the week.
Français: we will continue with our daily reading and with the study of our Zamboni novel.
We will also complete one more "Français à l'orale" activity.
Phew! That's A LOT of stuff!
Best rest up and be ready for our upcoming week of SO MUCH learning! It's going to be great! :)

Agenda items:
1. Any students still needing to finish up late/incomplete work will be asked to stay Monday at lunch in order to do so. Please make your lunch plans accordingly.
2. Our Celebration of Learning Conferences are coming up quickly! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 14 from 4:45 - 7:00. See you there!

Wednesday!
Happy Wednesday!
We started our day with "La table ronde" and were happy to welcome back Mme Deborah from the
U of M to administer our mid-point educational study survey. After we finished our survey, we had some time to work on our Brain concept maps. Mme Careen also handed back our Cortisol/Oxytocin collages. Some of us have chosen to keep our collages in our binders, while others have chosen to put them up in our lockers.
In Math, we worked in randomized groups to solve a PEDMAS puzzle. The puzzle was a bit tricky because it wasn't evident which pieces were the corner/outside pieces as each square had a number or an equation on each of the four sides. Half of our groups were successful in fitting all the pieces together, with the remaining groups getting pretty close!
Bravo à tous!

Happy Friday!
We made it! What a busy week!
In Math, we are continuing our work with the Order of Operations (PEDMAS) and were able to achieve a new high score in our PEDMAS challenge! We'll keep playing next week to see if we can break the current Room 208 record of 24 correct answers!
We also worked in groups to re-work the problem-solving Math assessment we completed at the end of January. Our task this morning, in addition to solving for the correct answer, was to organize and explain our work so that we could clearly justify how we arrived at our answer.
In Français, we continued reading our Zamboni text. In Chapter 3 we finally learn about the narrator's mom (who we have been wondering about since the beginning of the book!) and also learn a bit more about the narrator's life and why he chose to live with his dad when his parents got divorced.
Finally, in Science, we started our study of the five Kingdoms of living things.
We learned the names of the Kingdoms [Protiste (Protista), Monère (Monera), Mycète (Fungi), Plante (Plant) and Animal (Animal)] and also discussed how some scientists are now suggesting there are six Kingdoms instead of five.
Next week, we will begin discussing the main characteristics of each Kindgom, and will learn how things that seem so different, like Athlete's Foot and mushrooms, can possibly be a part of the same category. (Yes, gross... but also cool? Maybe?)
