Happy Tuesday!

Hello learning friends!
What a great morning of learning!

We started the day by putting Math and Art together to create a unique masterpiece of our names! Using a series of 100-grids, we coloured in the letters of our names and then calculated the percents, fractions out of 100 and decimal numbers for each letter.

In Français, we began writing the drafts of our Zamboni critiques. After having 4 minutes to do a "turn and talk" with our table groups, we had a block of 20 minutes to start planning and writing our texts. Tomorrow we will have time to complete our writing before we start revising and editing. Our goal is to have our work published by the end of next week. Wish us luck!

Les critiques de livre

Happy Wednesday, learning friends!

We were happy to welcome Mme Champagne to our classroom this morning for a Français
lesson about book critiques.
After studying different book critique exemplars and going on a search in our own library to find a variety of examples, we were ready to tackle writing a critique on our own.

Working at the boards in randomized groups of 3, we had 15 minutes to write about Le chandail de hockey using the list of criteria and words/expressions we borrowed from other texts. Twice during our writing time we were stopped to receive additional writing challenges (ex: include the genre of the book, be sure to only have two sentences, use at least one word from our word wall) to ensure our critique draft would be as complete as possible at the end of our writing time.

Our next step will be to vote on one critique that will then become the starting point for our class shared write before we embark on writing our own Zamboni critiques independently. Wish us luck! :)

Happy Monday!

Hello, everyone!
It was great to jump right back into learning after our three-day break.

In Math, we once again worked on Math Mobiles.
Today we focused on adding math equations to our list of directions of how to solve each mobile.

We all worked well in our groups and had great math discussions around how to best
represent each part of our solution. Bravo à tous! :)

A Busy Thursday Morning!

Hello, friends of learning!
We were BUSY this morning!
Here's a quick look at what we were up to.

We started our day in Math with a short video, "If the World Were a Village."
We learned how the world's nationalities, languages, food, ages (and more!) would all be represented if the world's population were scaled down to 100 people.

Our next step will be filling out our sheets, representing the data we learned in the movie, in different tables and diagrams. When comparing things to a group of 100, we can easily determine the percent of each category. This will be the starting point for a new unit on percents, fractions and decimals.

Next, we were off to visit Mme Scham's class to play a variety of "chance" games.
The games included: rolling doubles on a pair of dice, picking a red cube from a hat (filled with mostly other-coloured cubes), and picking a Jack of hearts from a deck or cards.

We each received "$20" and could play as many games as we could in 20 minutes (or until we ran out of money). While we played the games, Mme Scham's students recorded the results of whether we won or lost. They will be analyzing the collected data as part of their Stats and Probability unit.

After 20 minutes, many of us had spent (lost) all of their money, whereas others still had a few dollars remaining. Only 1 student from our group ended up winning money ($4) !
What a fun way to learn about Math (and about how easy it is to lose money when betting)!

We ended the morning in Français with a movie!

Now that we have studied the story Le chandail de hockey and the novel Zamboni, we will be doing a listening & viewing activity with the film Les Pee Wee: l'hiver qui a changé ma vie. We will be watching the movie over the next few days and then, at the film's conclusion, will be answering questions about the theme, the characters and the main events of the story.
Please ask me about what's happened in the movie so far.

Phew! That's it!
Great work this morning, team! :)

White Out / International Day of Pink Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday, friends of learning!
What a great morning we had today!

We were VERY fortunate to start our day by welcoming “Choeur de flûtes Phénix” to our school! The flute choir is here in Winnipeg on a 10-day tour, visiting all the way from France! The fifteen musicians range in age from 15-25 years old.
We were treated to a wonderful concert in the school gym, having the opportunity to hear a wide range of songs from a traditional Baroque-period piece to the more contemporary “The Rose” by Janis Joplin.
After the concert, the flute players from our school also had the opportunity to work with some of the musicians in small sectionals. What an incredible experience!

For the remainder of the morning, we:

1. Continued our invertebrate research in Science
2. Presented our CFOO Créativité speeches
3. Continued working on “les rapports” in Math.

Bravo to everyone for their hard work today!
(And be sure to keep reading below for a very exciting Ness clothing announcement!)

Welcome, Monday!

Hello families!
Our week of learning is off to a great start!

This morning in Math, we worked on ratios in randomized groups at the white boards. We needed to draw one picture to represent two different ratios.
Example: The ratio of shoes to animals is 5:6. The ratio of cats to dogs is 2:3.

We were very creative with our animals drawings and were able to explain our
reasoning behind each picture. Bravo!

Fruity Os!

Happy Friday!

This morning in Math we continued learning about ratios (les rapports). Ratios are a comparison of quantities. We use ratios almost every day, especially in the kitchen! We see ratios when we mix frozen orange juice, cook rice and bake a cake! Specific ratios ensure of juice won't be watered down, our rice won't be too mushy and our cake won't be dry!

And, because there's no better way to learn a new Math concept than with a sugary cereal treat, we opened up a box of Fruity Os to practice our ratio-writing skills!

We each got a small cup of Fruity Os and counted out 20. We then worked to answer specific questions comparing one colour of "O" to another. Mme Careen tried to trick us by asking us to write a ratio of how many BLUE Fruity Os we had. Silly Mme! There is no such thing as blue Fruity Os! :)

Our next step was be to find the percentage of each colour represented in our group of 20 Fruity Os. Because percents are fractions over 100 (and not over 20 like the fractions we had written),
we had a bit of Math thinking to do!

Ex: Out of her group of 20, Mme Careen had 4 yellow Fruity Os.
What percentage of her Fruity Os are yellow?

In addition to learning about ratios, this activity is also getting us ready to review and tackle fractions and equivalent fractions! Who knew there was so much Math hiding in a box of Fruity Os ?!

Tuesday!

We had a great morning of learning today!

In Français we started our Zamboni summaries and had time to work on our PRINTEMPS acrostic poems. Many students have already written, revised and published their work. Bravo!

In Math, we continued working on "les rapports" and in Science we learned a bit more about the unique characteristics of vertebrates, focusing specifically on Amphibians.

Great work today, everyone! :)
