Brrrrrrrrr-sday!

Happy Thursday!

These cold temperatures certainly aren't great for much, except if you happen to be talking about negative (and positive) integers in Math, which coincidentally, we are!

Today in Math, we began our mini-unit on integers and, as a class, came up with quite a long list of where we see positive and negative integers in our daily lives.

We will be working with integers over the next couple of weeks, so that we can successfully:
1. extend a number line to include numbers less than zero
2. order a set of integers and correctly place them on a number line
3. compare two integers using the appropriate symbols ( <, >, = )
4. describe contexts in which integers are used

Have a great weekend! Stay warm! :)

Brrrrrr! It's Wednesday!

Here's a question to get your brain warmed up...

How many times do we use the digit '7' when writing the numbers from 1 - 100? 1 - 1000?
How do you know? What is your strategy?

Brrrrrr!

It may be c-c-c-cold outside, but inside Room 208 it's nice and toasty!

In Math, after doing our calcul mental assessment, we put our addition skills to work as we faced off in an "Addition War" tournament.
Bravo to Ellie and Aidan who tied in the A-side final!

In Science, we continued our procedure-writing activity from yesterday and had a chance to put our procedures to the test! Each group, in turn, read out their step-by-step instructions and Mme Careen followed the steps to see if we were successful in explaining how to carry out the experiment. All groups did incredibly well, leaving only minor "nitpicky" corrections to be made. Bravo à tous!

Happy Monday!

Hello!
What a great morning we had together!

In Mathé, after correcting our Calcul Mental sheet, we had a work period to finish up our graphing booklet and our Transformations art piece. A few of us were also introduced to the Math game,
"Ninja Bed Bugs."

In Français, we took some time for daily reading and then had some class time to finish and review our Le Chandail de hockey resumés that we started on Friday. Most groups will be ready to share their resumés with each other during class tomorrow. Bravo!

Finally, in Science, we worked in our table teams to do a procedure (la méthode) writing activity for an experiment Mme Careen made up. Before starting, we discussed what a good procedure should include. Our list included: it should be in order, the steps should be numbered, the steps should be detailed and easy to understand/follow.

We will have 10 minutes in class tomorrow to finish our procedures before Mme Careen tests them out to see if we were successful in writing out our directions. Wish us luck! :)

Before wrapping up this post with Agenda Items, I wanted to take a quick second to celebrate our band students who did a surprise "flash mob" style performance in the hall today right before lunch!
What a FUN way to end the morning!
You can see the performance by clicking on the link below. (A BIG thanks to Mme Banks for catching this event on camera and sharing it with me so that I, in turn, could share it with you!)

It's Friday!

Happy (way. too. cold.) Friday! :)

Today in Français, we worked in groups to write a resumé for Le Chandail de Hockey, the book we are currently studying in class.

Collaborating with our peers, we wrote down the main events of the story, using a variety of transition words to connect our ideas together. We will share our resumés with the class next week, having one more opportunity to review our own group's work before Mme Careen assesses our writing.

Thursday!

Brrrr! It's a chilly Thursday out there!
To forget about the cold, we had a busy morning of learning here in Room 208!

In Math, we spent the period analyzing different types of tables and graphs, including: bar graphs, double bar graphs, broken-line graphs and circle graphs.

Next up, we got started on our next CFOO presentations and, using PicCollage, made
Oxytocin (Happy)/Cortisol (Stress)collages.
Please ask me what photos I chose to include for each section of my collage.

We ended the morning with Science, taking time to write our conclusions for Experience #1.
A reminder that completed lab reports are due in class tomorrow.

Have a great afternoon, everyone! Stay warm! :)

Le chandail de hockey

Today, in Francais, we read the book "Le chandail de hockey" together as a class.

Every few pages, we would stop and ask questions about the story and make additional predictions as to what might happen next. We learned, in the end, that wearing a blue and white Toronto Maple Leafs jersey in small town Quebec, circa 1948 does NOT get well received.

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Hey, Tuesday!

Hello, Tuesday!

Today, we kicked off our morning with a "Bonnnnnnng!"
In Math, working in randomized groups at the white boards, we set out to calculate how many times a clock would "Bong!" in one day, knowing that it chimes the time every hour on the hour.
After calculating for one day, we were then tasked with finding how many "Bongs!" we would hear in one week and then one year. This question had us collaborating with our peers to find an effective calculation strategy to arrive at the correct answer.

We all worked SO well with our groups this morning!
Bravo à tous! :)

Hello, Monday!

Happy Monday!

Today in Math we learned a new mental math strategy an did one final review for our upcoming
"Les transformations" assessment coming up later this week.

In Science, we began graphing our data from our first lab demo that we completed in class last week. Tomorrow we will discuss the lab questions and look at writing the conclusion together as a class. Completed lab reports will be due Friday.

In Francais, we started studying the book, "Le chandail de hockey." After looking at the pictures in the book, we made predictions about what the story might be about. After reading the first two pages together, we have already discovered that one of our predictions was certainly correct; ALL the boys who play hockey want to be just like #9, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard!

We ended our morning with another mini-lesson for our brain unit.
Today we added the words: serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, cortisol, and oxytocin to our word list and briefly discussed each of these neurotransmitters' roles in our brain.
Our mini homework assignment over the next few days is to reflect on things that make us happy (triggering oxytocin) and things that cause us stress (triggering cortisol). We will be doing a small activity with these ideas later in the week as a way to better understand how and why we have feelings.

A Busy Thursday!

Hello, friends of learning!

Today, in Math, we continued practicing multi-step transformations by drawing SO MANY cats!

Please ask me how this activity went and what my favourite cat name was! :)

In Français, we took some time for silent reading and listened to the remaining CFOO presentations.
We also took some time this morning to continue with our brain lessons. Today's topic was "neurons and neurotransmitters." After watching a few neurotransmitter simulations online (HERE and HERE) we took time to act out how a message is passed through a neuron and then continues to transfer through the synapse and on to the next neuron. Please ask me about our "pass the ball" activity and what we noticed as a class.

Finally, in Science, we completed the second test in our lab demo. We noticed that, in general, the results from the second test were very similar to the data we recorded yesterday.
We have calculated the average time of how long the candle remained lit for each beaker and will use these results when we graph the data in class next week.

It's Wednesday!

Hello, Wednesday!
We had a great morning of learning today!

In Math, after finishing our calcul mental assessment, we practiced drawing multi-step transformations (completing a series of rotations, reflections and translation) to a single figure.
We will practice our transformations skills for the reminder of the week before completing a short, formal assessment early next week (likely Wednesday).

In Francais today, we were treated to many great CFOO - Opinion presentations. Bravo to all students who took to the time to write a well-prepared speech. 😃💬

Finally, in Science, we completed the first "test" in our first lab demo of the year. The goal of the experiment is to see how much time it takes for a candle's flame to extinguish when covered by different volumes of beakers.

We will repeat the same experiment again tomorrow (because a good experiment is repeatable!) and then calculate the average time for each beaker before representing the results in the form of a graph. Please ask me about the predictions I made in class today and what results we have noted thus far!
(You can also ask me about Mme Careen's AWESOME safety goggles! Ha!)

Thursday!

Hello everyone!

In Math today, we continued learning about "les transformations géométriques." After watching a fun BrainPop video about transformations, we practiced drawing translations, rotations and reflections of different letters of the alphabet.
* A translation is when an object is moved along the x, y or z axis.
* A rotation is when an object is rotated around a centre point (pivot). We can express a rotation as a fraction or in degrees.
* A reflection is when the object is flipped. An object can be reflected horizontally, vertically or diagonally, resulting in a image the appears backwards or upside-down.
We are currently working on these three transformations in isolation, but will combine the movements early next week.

In Français, we have started publishing our sentences about our New Year's resolutions. Today, after reviewing our sentence one final time, we used an iPad to access the website bonpatron.com to do a final check of our writing. The site will identify parts of our writing that need to be checked or modified, and it will help us by giving us options of how to make our writing better. Once we have done this final check, we will write a good copy of our resolution to be published in our classroom for our classmates to read.

In Science, we are working on graphing our Tomatosphere results, and have learned how to plot two sets of data on the same graph by using a legend. We will continue applying our graphing skills early next week as we complete our first lab demo in class.

Brain Concept Maps

Happy Wednesday, friends of learning!

We started our day with a "Les chevaliers de la table ronde" session.
Today we learned all about mind/concept mapping!

After watching a couple of short videos and looking at a few exemplars, we were ready to get started on our very own mind maps showing all that we've learned about the brain so far!

Here is a mind map all about how to create a mind map!
Using our brain note booklets for reference, we started creating our own mind maps.
As we continue to move forward with our brain/mental health/well-being lessons, we will keep adding more and more info to our mind maps.

This is also a skill we can use for any topic in any subject.
Creating a well-organized, colourful mind map with pictures, key words and arrows has shown to increase our brain's retention of material by 20%! Wow!

It's Great to Be Back!

Hello Room 208 friends!
Happy Monday! Happy New Year!
It was so wonderful seeing everyone back at school with so many stories to share!

We started our morning learning about what kept us busy over the break: sleeping in, reading books, eating candy and watching movies were very popular squares on our "Trouve quelqu'un qui a..." bingo!

We then paired up once to do a special "getting to know you" interview. We started by asking our partner 15 questions and then took their answers and put them into a silly "Mad Libs" style paragraph. This activity helped us get our brains back in to "french immersion" mode after a two-week break by having us read aloud and answer questions IN FRENCH! :)

Agenda items:
1. January Scholastic orders - due Friday, January 18.

Have a great first week back, everyone! :)
