Au revoir, le mois de mai!

Our last morning of May was a busy one!
In Math, we worked in groups at the white board to review for our upcoming assessment on percents and fractions. Mme Careen created 13 questions strongly inspired by the assessment itself for us to work on. By collaborating with our classmates, we all had a chance to ask questions further solidify our understanding of mixed numbers, improper fractions, reducing fractions, percents, decimal numbers, etc. We finished the period feeling much more confident for Monday's assessment.

In Français, we continued our word work with our Reader's Theatre scripts. We will finish our mini "word walls" and continue practicing our texts in class next week. We will also take time to write summaries of our stories and answer a set of comprehension questions to demonstrate our understanding of the story. Things are coming along!

Reader's Theatre!

Today in Français, we continued working on our Reader's Theatre scripts. Today's goal was to create a glossary of words that we will teach to the rest of our classmates before presenting our plays. Working together to read through our entire script, we identified words that we (and likely our peers) would be unfamiliar with. From there, we grouped the words into categories (feminine and masculine nouns, verbs, adjectives, and expressions) and collaborated to write a short, clear definition and/or draw a picture to describe each word.

Our next step is to re-write our glossary on chart paper using our colour-coded system.
This word work will help us better understand the structure and grammar of our texts and will help our classmates expand their French vocabulary and better understand our
Reader's Theatre presentations, too!

Does air have a mass?

Happy Wednesday, learning friends!

After starting our day outside for our annual spring community clean-up, we got straight to work being super-scientists! Our goal today: to prove that air has a mass!

Working in teams of three, and using a 2L plastic bottle and a pressure pump, we pushed air into our bottles (in increments of 25 pumps) and then weighed our bottle using an electronic scale.

Slowly but surely, we saw the mass of the bottle increase! Wow!
After we completed the experiment, we worked in our groups to discuss and answer 4 observation questions to help solidify our understanding of the experiment's purpose.
Great experimenting this morning, team! :)

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday, learning friends!

Over the past week, in Math, we have been working on improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Today, we focused on how to convert one form to the other and looked at three different methods.
This Math Antics video, which we watched in class earlier this week, is a great review.
Please ask me about how to change an improper fraction to a mixed number, and vice versa!
Happy math-ing! :)

It's Friday!

Hello, learning friends!
We had a great morning in Math and we'd love to share a bit about it!

We started with Fraction Splats.
What are Fraction Splats, you may ask?
Here's an example:

The total value on the page is indicated in the upper righthand corner. (In this case, 8.)
The value is represented in the form of circles and fraction circles. Using what we know, our task is to determine what value is hidden behind the 'splat.'
The total value of what we see is 2 1/2 (1 whole plus 3 halves = 2 1/2)
Therefore, 5 1/2 must be hidden behind the splat.

After working through a few different 'splat' pages, we took our discussion one step further to include how we could determine the quantity of halves it would take to make up the total.
Ex. The value 2 1/2 could also be shown as 5/2. We know this because 2 halves make a whole (2/2) and there are three additional halves shown. 2/2 + 3/2 = 5/2.
That would mean 5 1/2 can be represented as 11/2, and in total, it takes 16 halves to make up 8.
16/2 = 8.
Cool, right?!

Here's another one for you to try!
What value is hidden by the splat?

Did you get 2 3/4? (11/4?)Way to go!
(And, did you know, by working through these slides, you've just introduced yourself to the concepts of improper fractions and mixed numbers? Really!)

After working through the Fraction Splats, we continued working with the idea of improper fractions and mixed numbers by breaking out the pattern blocs!
We got to work creating different images in order to determine the value of the each 'design.'

By collaborating with our table groups, we were all able to represent the designs both concretely (with the pattern blocks) and symbolically (by solving for the improper fractions and the mixed number).
How math-tastic is that?!
Great work today, everyone! :)

Félicitations!

Happy Wednesday, learning friends!
What a busy morning!

It was our turn to present at this month's Celebration of Learning assembly,
and what a truly great job we did!

We presented our learning in Français and Mathématiques.

For Français, we shared some of our Zamboni book critiques.

For Mathématiques, we represented 4 different percent questions using animals we drew ourselves.

Example: There are 16 animals.
75% are in a water. 50% are monkeys or crocodiles. 25% are penguins or pigs. 0% are fish.
(Therefore: 12/16 are in a tree, 8/16 are monkeys or crocodiles, 4/16 are penguins or pigs
and 0/16 are fish).

At the end of our presentation, Mme Careen presented the three "Chevalier par excellence" awards for our class. Félicitations to Bailey, Nathaniel and Quinn!
(Unfortunately, Nathaniel and Bailey were absent from school this morning, so they will receive their awards once they are back!)

After the assembly, we took a bit of time to embark on a stealthy kindness mission in honour of Conscious Kindness Day.

We each took on the task of writing at least 20 kind, positive messages on post-it notes and then took to the halls to ensure every locker received a sticky note before morning locker break.
It was a bit of a mad dash at the end, but we were successful with our Conscious Kindness task! :)

A big BRAVO to everyone for their hard work this morning!
You are an incredible group of Chevalier Superstars! :)

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!
We had a full morning of learning today!

After starting our day with a few demonstrations in Science, we moved on to Français where we had the period to work on completing and revising our Zamboni book critiques.

After locker break, after doing our calcul mental assessment and LaLaLa (today we all got to play a game! Fun!), we began our preparations for our assembly presentation next Wednesday.

It was a sea of construction paper, scissors and tape, but things are definitely coming along!
We will begin putting all of the parts together on Monday; wish us luck on our preparation journey! :)

Happy Wednesday!

Hello, learning friends!
We had a busy morning of learning!

In Math, after correcting our Calcul Mental homework, we started preparing for our upcoming "presentation" at next week's Celebration of Learning assembly.
We will be sharing about our learning in math and français. Every student will be involved in the assembly presentation in some form, either by sharing their Zamboni book critique, explaining our learning in Math, or by drawing an animal picture to be used during our demonstration of different percents questions. Stay tuned for some 'sneak peak' photos to be posted as we continue our preparations!

*Please note: Our May "Celebration of Learning" assembly will be Wednesday, May 15, beginning at approximately 9:15am in the school gymnasium.
All families and community members are most welcome to join us!

It's Monday!

Happy Monday!
We had a short but productive morning together today!

In Math, we worked in randomized groups of three at the white board to represent different percents in the form of pictures.

In Français, we continued working on our Zamboni book critiques. We are all at different steps in our writing process: some of us are still finishing our first drafts, while others have moved on to revising and editing with a classmate and starting a final revision with an online correction platform
(such as bonpatron.com).

Our goal is to have our writing revised and ready to publish by Friday, and we'll be working hard in class all week to ensure we meet our deadline!

Happy May!

Happy Wednesday!
It's hard to believe that May is already here! Wow!

Today during our "La table ronde" session we continued with our mental health and well-being lessons. One of our essential understandings for today was: " Mental health is not static - we all have good times and hard times throughout our lives."

As part of our lesson, we worked in randomized groups to place a series of emotion words along a mental-wellness continuum, with the goal of classifying emotions within the terms of

"flourishing" and "languishing."

We all worked well in our teams and were able to classify the emotions along the continuum. We agreed that some words were easier to place than others and that many emotions fell into the middle of the continuum. We also learned that there are a LOT of words to specify how we are feeling, extending far beyond the common: happy, sad, angry.
Please ask me about today's lesson and about some of the new vocabulary words I learned.
