Happy Summer!

It's 9:00am and the halls are quiet. I'm still surprised at how quickly this year has flown by.

As I look around my semi-boxed-up, ready-for-summer-cleaning classroom, it astounds me to think
how much learning and growing we did this year together as a team. Through ups and downs, we set goals, celebrated successes, worked hard, had fun, learned and shared some hard lessons, collaborated with our peers, set new standards for ourselves, set out on field trip adventures and truly grew into our roles as " les chevaliers."

And, because this blog was created for and truly belongs to you, the students, I am signing off by letting your words share what this year has meant to you. Wishing you all the most wonderful summer!

À la prochaine, mes amis!
Mme Careen 😊

The Last Thursday!

Happy last day of school!
We had a great last morning together. Keep reading to see what we were up to!

We started our day with a yummy Jamaican treat! Kevin brought in chicken curry, rice, carrot salad and plantains for us to enjoy! Our classroom (and our hallway) have never smelled so good!
Thank you so much Kevin (and Mom!) for waking up extra early in order to
prepare such a tasty meal to share. Merci! :)

After our savoury snack, we took on the QBitz Extreme challenge!
The pattens on the EXTREME cubes are very different from the set of cubes we used earlier this week. The images we created were more complex and made our brains think, think, think!

Next up was our paper airplane challenge.
We had the option of 1) using one of the six templates Mme Careen had posted on the board or
2) creating our own airplane design, with the goal of seeing which model would fly the furthest.

We had 25 minutes to create, test and make modifications to our airplanes before heading to first, the library and then, outside to fly them! We were all able to create some wonderful flying masterpieces!

We ended our morning with a story, Only One You, and then ate a yummy ice cream treat while playing a Math or Français game of choice with a partner or group. Some of us chose to play cards, or re-try one of the Math activities from yesterday's class, while others chose to play Colour Addict (a popular Français game this year) or take another stab at QBitz Extreme.

A great ending to a great year!
Félicitations à tous! :)

The Last Wednesday

Hello, learning friends!

Today, after saying farewell to our 8s at this morning's assembly, we started our time together reading the book Tomorrow's Alphabet. It was an interactive read, as we had the chance to predict what the letter might represent. Ex: A is for seed, tomorrow's Apple. This is one of Mme Careen's favourite books to read at the end of the year! :)

After reading together, we had a chance to reflect on our favourite memory of the year. We each got a cue card and could write down our thought, in either English or French. Mme Careen will be posting all of our memories later this week when she signs off on our classroom blog for the year. Be sure to check back to see what we chose! :)

For the remainder of our morning, we worked through different Math activities that our Division Math Team was so kind to lend out to us. We had 13 different Math-based activities to choose from, with the 2D-3D booklet easily being the class favourite (and the trickiest, too)!
Please ask me what Math activities I chose to tackle today!

Thanks for a great morning, everyone! :)

The Last Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday!

As part of our study of Bernoulli's Principle, we worked in teams of two to create mini water sprayers using a small paper cup, water, two straws and our own powerful breath!

It took a bit of practice, but soon enough there was water spraying everywhere! Fun!

The Last Monday!

Happy Monday!
Happy last week of school!

We started our day with the last of our Reader's Theatre presentation,
Pourquoi les moustiques bourdonnent les oreilles.
The group did a great job on their word wall and presented their plays with expression and confidence.  Félicitations! :)

Next, in Science, we spent some time learning about a Bernoulli's Principle.
We learned that a curved edge/side, such as we see on an airplane or a bird's wing, will force air to flow faster over top than underneath an object, thus creating two different zones of pressure.
This difference of pressure is what creates LIFT!

We then spent some time outside, further exploring Bernoulli's Principle. We started by comparing the shape and size of different frisbees and discussed how that might affect the flight of the disc.
We then threw the disc both right-side up and upside down to see if we could notice a difference.

We ended the morning with an action group shot!
(Mme Careen only got hit with one frisbee in the taking of these pictures!)

Have a great afternoon!

Les chansons and Q-Bitz!

Hello learning families!
We had a busy morning of learning in Room 208!

In Français, we had the chance to increase our exposure to francophone music.
Using the iPads, we scanned different QR codes posted around the classroom which brought us to different vidéoclips of well known francophone artists.
After watching the vidéoclips, we wrote down the name of the artist and song, and the subject of the video. We also shared our opinion about whether or not we liked the song and the vidéoclip. We listened to wide range of genres; everything from country to heavy metal to pop.
Please ask me about my favourite song of the day!

In Math, we took on a team QBitz challenge! Working in randomized groups of 2 or 3, we raced against other teams to be the first to recreate the pattern using our set of QBitz dice. The first 3 teams to finish earned points for their team; 10 points for first place, 5 for second place and 3 for third place. While some teams missed the score board completely (no worries, friends!) the battle for first place ended up being quite close. Félicitations to Équipe 8 who won the day with 41 points! :)

Great work today, everyone!

Bataille de l'aire

Happy Tuesday!
Today in Math, we played "Bataille de l'aire."

How to play?
1. Find graph paper, 2 dice and 2 different coloured markers and a partner.
2. Roll the dice, which will give you the dimensions of a rectangle.
3. Draw out your rectangle on the graph paper and write the area of the rectangle inside.
4. Play continues back and forth until you can no longer add rectangles.
5. Add up the total area of all your rectangles to see who wins!
(*We played this game with an 8-sided die and a 6-sided die, but it can be played with any
combination of dice you might have).

Happy Math-ing! :)

Design Process!

Happy Tuesday, friends of learning!

Today in Science we tackled an "aéronef" design process activity.
We were each given one straw and access to tape and a variety of different types and lengths of paper to create our designs.

Our task was to build and modify our aircraft, making sure to draw a detailed diagram and note any modifications for each model. After the end of all of our tests, we had to decide which model flew the best and explain why we chose it as our 'winner.'

What a fun way to learn more about the principles of flight!

Thursday!

Happy Thursday!
Even though Mme Careen was away today, we still got SO much done!
In Mathé, we worked on calculating the perimeter of polygons. This video served as a good review before we got started.
In Français, we practiced our Reader's Theatre scripts, answered accompanying comprehension questions and watched an ONIVA episode.
In Science, we handed over the teaching to the very knowledgable Bill Nye and watched a video about Flight. Mr. Nye, using his energetic and zany tactics, was able to teach us about the four forces of flight and Bernoulli's Principle. Wow!
That's a whole lot of learning for one morning! :)

Wednesday!

Hello, learning friends!

Today, after our monthly "La table ronde" session, we spent the rest of of morning together learning about the Hindenburg explosion and the different theories of how it exploded.
We started by watching the original footage and then watched the Mythbusters episode (minus the crocodile segments) in which they test different combinations of factors that may have lead to the explosion. In addition to learning more about the Hindenburg, we also saw a great example of both the experimental process and the design process as they planned and carried out multiple tests to prove their theories. Very fascinating stuff! :)

Next on our list in Science:  the four forces of flight, with a special focus on lift and how it is created!
Stay tuned!

Agenda items:
1. Any students who did not present their CFOO speeches on Monday will present on Friday.
2. All library books due back Friday, June 7.
3. All late/missing work from Term 3 due by Monday, June 10.

Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday!
Today in Math, we started our Shape and Space unit. First on our list: regular and irregular polygons and how to calculate their perimeter.
After some class discussion, we worked in pairs to find the perimeter of a variety of different figures, and were able to deduce some handy shortcuts along the way!

In Français, we continue to work in our reader's theater groups and are getting closer to our presentation date! We are working hard at our word work and at reading our roles with expression.

Finally, in Science, we learned a bit about the history of hot air balloons and zeppelins. On our list for tomorrow: the infamous Hindenburg explosion! Stay tuned!

It's June!

Welcome, 10th month of school!
This morning was a busy one with a Math assessment and our final CFOO presentations of the year!
We also found a bit of time to finish our reports for our "does air have a mass?" lab and we began discussing how certain objects, such as helium-filled balloons, are "lighter than air" which is why they can fly...
... much like this famous movie scene. Enjoy! 🎈
